Criteria we should take into consideration when a group
The competitions lately have become more and more often and unfortunately after each race a lot of complaints are heard about unfair grading. That is, of course, because every area has its own criteria. For example, in my area we have as a fact that we grade 60 – 80% the show the bird gives and also how the bird dive.

There are 4 basic criteria when we give grades to keep in mind.

  1. The show

  2. The shape of the whole group

  3. The height they can reach

  4. The birds fall (to the ground)

Let me explain what I mean. When we grade the show the bird should have good wings but also not empty in its tail. As for the shape of the birds, at least 80% of them should have its own course – not 2 or 3 of them flying together.

The few that remain up in the sky should spread, fly in different directions from one another not all together. As for the third criterion – the height – the birds must go where the people can’t see them with “naked eye”. Also, something that only few people know about – those who are experienced trainers – is the time that it takes to go up in the sky. Most people think that pigeons should fly for half an hour where they can’t be seen but this is wrong. Of course the birds will do what you teach them to do but the right timing is 3 – 4 minutes of flying and 3 – 4 minutes to get down.

Birds that take 10 or 15 minutes to get high must be disqualified from the competition. Firstly, because it takes them too long to go up, so they are in danger of being caught by hawks. Moreover, if there’s no wind the pigeons can’t finish and some people let them fly too long not to finish but to decide to get down.
But to get back to grading. All four criteria are equally important. We can’t say that the first criterion is the basic one and gets a higher score.

Neither can we say that the second one is less important so get a lower score.
If someone succeeds in producing pigeons in different colors from the basic, which is grey then he should be given congratulations.
Lastly, I want to say that unfortunately there are many people who breed handicapped pigeons and worst of all sell them at high prices to ignorant, not experienced "pigeon trainers" of the capital, Athens. As a result, the pigeon called "outsitiko" or "vouta" is infected the original Greek pigeon is not pure anymore.
